Fuat Sezgin spent eleven years imprisoned and under professional embargo in Turkey after the 1960 military coup, during which time he lost his academic position at Istanbul University. He eventually rebuilt his career in Frankfurt, where he founded the Institute for the History of Arabic-Islamic Science in 1982 and assembled one of the most significant collections of Islamic scientific instruments in existence. Turkey issued this coin the year after his death, having awarded him a state funeral — a reconciliation of sorts with an institution that had once expelled him.
