Süleyman Demirel served as Prime Minister seven times between 1965 and 1993, surviving two military coups that removed him from office — in 1971 and again in 1980 — before returning to power each time. He was elected President in 1993 and served until 2000. This issue belongs to Turkey's ongoing commemorative portrait series honoring former heads of state, a program the Darphane has expanded considerably since the late 2010s.
