Oruç Reis — older brother of the more famous Hayreddin Barbarossa — was a 16th-century Ottoman corsair who terrorized Aragonese and Genoese shipping across the western Mediterranean before dying in battle near Tlemcen in 1518, shot by Spanish cavalry while attempting to flee on foot after his horse was killed under him. The Turkish state has periodically issued collector silver in his name as part of a broader series commemorating Ottoman naval figures, a program that accelerated noticeably after 2013 alongside renewed official emphasis on Turkish maritime history.
