This piece commemorates the Grand National Assembly of Turkey's diplomatic recognition of Azerbaijan's independence in 1991 — one of the first such recognitions internationally, and a politically significant act given the two nations' shared Turkic identity and the phrase "two states, one nation" that has defined their relationship since.
