Murad I consolidated Ottoman power in the Balkans through the 1360s and 1370s, establishing the devshirme system of conscripted Christian youth that would define Ottoman military organization for generations. He died at Kosovo Polje in 1389 — accounts differ on whether he was killed during the battle or assassinated immediately after by a Serbian nobleman posing as a defector.
