Additional information

Murad I consolidated Ottoman power in the Balkans through the 1360s and 1370s, establishing the devshirme system of conscripted Christian youth that would define Ottoman military organization for generations. He died at Kosovo Polje in 1389 — accounts differ on whether he was killed during the battle or assassinated immediately after by a Serbian nobleman posing as a defector. The Turkish State Mint has issued numerous commemorative silver pieces in this format honoring figures from early Ottoman history, though Murad I remains among the less frequently struck subjects compared to his successors.
