Turkey's Darphane has issued biographical sultan series coins intermittently since the early 2000s, with Mehmet I — who reunified the Ottoman state after the catastrophic interregnum of 1402–1413 following Timur's defeat of Bayezid I at Ankara — receiving renewed institutional attention as a figure of restoration rather than conquest. The interregnum, during which his four brothers fought a decade-long civil war, nearly ended the dynasty altogether.
