Mehmed III is best remembered for ordering the execution of his nineteen brothers upon his accession in 1595 — the largest single application of the Ottoman fratricide law, itself codified by Mehmed II to prevent dynastic civil war. He also led the Ottoman army personally at the Battle of Keresztes in 1596, the last sultan to command in the field for nearly a century afterward.
