Issued by the Turkish State Mint during the 44-day Nagorno-Karabakh war of autumn 2020, in which Azerbaijani forces — backed diplomatically and militarily by Turkey — retook significant territory from Armenian control for the first time since the 1994 ceasefire. The timing was deliberate; the coin was released while the conflict was still active.
Turkey's open alignment with Azerbaijan drew sharp international criticism and complicated ceasefire negotiations ultimately brokered by Russia in November 2020.
