Additional information

Hattusha — the Bronze Age capital of the Hittite Empire near modern Boğazkale — was rediscovered by European scholars in the 19th century but only definitively identified as the Hittite royal seat after Hugo Winckler's excavations uncovered thousands of cuneiform tablets there in 1906. Turkey's commemorative silver program has drawn repeatedly from Anatolian pre-Ottoman heritage, reflecting a deliberate curatorial interest in civilizations that predated Turkic settlement of the peninsula by nearly three millennia.

The site has been UNESCO-listed since 1986.
