Issued on the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign, this coin commemorates one of the Ottoman Empire's few unambiguous military successes of the First World War — a nine-month Allied attempt to seize the Dardanelles that cost both sides roughly 500,000 casualties combined. The campaign made Mustafa Kemal's reputation; his order to the 57th Infantry Regiment at Chunuk Bair — "I am not ordering you to attack. I am ordering you to die." — became foundational mythology for the Turkish Republic he would later found.
The 57th Regiment was effectively annihilated carrying out that order. Turkey still does not field a regiment bearing that number.
