The 20 Lira note belongs to the eighth emission series, introduced after the redenomination that stripped six zeroes from the old Turkish lira in 2005 — one of the most extreme currency rescalings in modern history, made necessary by inflation that had pushed nominal values into the millions. The new lira (Yeni Türk Lirası, later simply Türk Lirası from 2009) was a deliberate psychological reset as much as a technical one.
Printed entirely in-house at the Ankara banknote printing works, which has produced Turkish currency continuously since 1955. The color-shifting ink on this denomination is applied via intaglio, a relatively costly security measure for a mid-range face value.
