The Yeşilay (Green Crescent in Turkish, though internationally affiliated under the Green Cross framework) was founded in 1920, the same year the Turkish National Movement was consolidating power during the War of Independence. Its founding physician-advocates were working against alcohol and narcotic dependency at a moment when the collapsing Ottoman administration had left public health infrastructure in ruins. The centennial issue marks an organization that has outlasted every political rupture of the republic's first hundred years.
