Gaziantep's designation as a "Gazi" (veteran) city dates to the Turkish War of Independence, when its population mounted a prolonged resistance against French occupation forces between 1919 and 1921. The city held out for over ten months before a French withdrawal effectively ended the siege — the Grand National Assembly granted the honorific prefix by law in 1921, which is precisely the centennial this coin commemorates.
