Pattern coinage for Greece in 1869 was produced in Paris as the young kingdom worked to stabilize its monetary system following accession to the Latin Monetary Union in 1868. KM#E8 is an essai strike, almost certainly produced in very limited numbers for official presentation or ministerial approval rather than any circulation consideration. Greece's coin production during George I's reign was contracted almost entirely to the Paris Mint, and patterns from this period rarely escaped official channels.
