Additional information

Greece's mid-1970s coinage was shaped almost entirely by the collapse of the military junta in 1974 and the restoration of democratic government under Konstantinos Karamanlis. This denomination was part of a broader reissue of the lepta series that followed, reestablishing civilian monetary authority after seven years of the Colonels' regime. The aluminium-magnesium composition had been in use for small Greek denominations since the 1950s and was retained here for cost reasons as the economy adjusted to post-junta instability.

The series ran only three years before metrication pressures and inflation rendered the 20-lepta effectively worthless in daily commerce.
