Sierra Leone redenominated its currency in 2022, replacing the old Leone at a rate of 1000:1 — meaning this 20 Leone note is the functional equivalent of the former 20,000 Leones. The redenomination was a direct response to decades of inflationary erosion that had rendered low-denomination notes essentially useless in daily transactions.
