This is a pattern strike from Romania's 1906 Jubilee year, commemorating forty years of Carol I's reign — a period that had taken the country from an Ottoman vassal principality to a fully independent kingdom. Pattern coinage from this issue was produced in multiple metals and alloys as the Romanian monetary authorities evaluated designs, and the brass strikes occupy a middle tier between the base-metal trial pieces and the precious-metal presentation examples.
