Rihards Zariņš was one of the most accomplished engravers in interwar Europe — a Latvian who had worked for the Imperial Russian government before returning to serve the independent republic. His involvement here is the distinguishing fact about this series. The intaglio work reflects training and precision rarely available to small states printing their own currency.
The lats itself was pegged to gold in 1922 and remained stable through the 1930s depression, an unusual achievement. By 1935 Latvia was one of the few countries in the region that had not devalued. This note circulated in that narrow window of genuine monetary stability before Soviet occupation in 1940 effectively ended the currency.
