Malawi issued this piece for the 1998 FIFA World Cup held in France, a tournament the country did not qualify for — nor has it ever qualified for a World Cup finals. The coin exists entirely as a numismatic product, one of dozens of similar issues from non-participating nations that flooded the commemorative market in the late 1990s through licensed arrangements with FIFA.
KM#112 was struck in limited quantities for collector sale and saw no meaningful circulation.
