Peterhof Palace and its cascade fountains were built under Peter the Great beginning in 1714, conceived explicitly as Russia's answer to Versailles — a demonstration that the newly Westernized empire could match any European court in architectural ambition. The complex was extensively destroyed by German forces during the occupation of 1941–44, and the postwar Soviet restoration effort ran for decades.
Malawi's World Heritage-themed silver program from this period placed it in the company of dozens of small nations issuing collector rounds with no meaningful connection to the subject. Mintage figures for the series were modest, aimed squarely at the thematic bullion collector market.
