The Constantine Palace at Strelna, outside St. Petersburg, served as the venue for the 2006 G8 summit under Putin — a deliberate choice meant to signal Russia's restored international standing after the post-Soviet decade. The palace had been derelict for much of the Soviet period and was comprehensively restored between 2001 and 2003 at enormous state expense specifically to host that summit.
Malawi's architectural series of this period drew heavily on European landmarks with no direct connection to the issuing country, aimed squarely at the collector market.
