Malawi's 20 Kwacha occupied an awkward position in the series through the late 1980s — high enough in face value to be significant in everyday transactions, but issued during a period when the kwacha was under sustained depreciation pressure tied to Malawi's structural adjustment agreements with the IMF. The Reserve Bank was simultaneously managing note supply and defending a crawling peg, which meant print runs for higher denominations were kept deliberately conservative.
De La Rue supplied most of Malawi's notes throughout the Banda era. The watermark security on P#22 reflects the relatively modest specification level typical of smaller African central bank contracts of the period — multicolour intaglio printing was the primary security reliance, not elaborate embedded features.
