Issued to mark the 1,090th anniversary of Tomislav's coronation, which medieval sources place around 925 AD when the Pope recognized him as the first king of a unified Croatian state. The anniversary itself is a somewhat awkward number to commemorate — 1,090 years — suggesting this was less a planned milestone and more an opportunistic bullion issue in a period when Croatian mints were producing a steady stream of small gold commemoratives.
