The Faroese 20 Krónur series printed by Danmarks Nationalbank for use in the Faroe Islands reflects the peculiar monetary arrangement between Copenhagen and Tórshavn — the islands use Danish krone-equivalent banknotes issued under Faroese authority but produced and managed by the Danish central bank, a system that has persisted since 1940 when wartime isolation from occupied Denmark forced the islands into a separate currency track.
Ingálvur av Reyni was one of the Faroes' most significant painters, and his involvement in the design gave the series an unusually local artistic character for notes produced entirely on the mainland.
