Niels Bohr published his atomic model in 1913, making this coin's issue year the centenary of that work. The model — which proposed that electrons occupy discrete energy levels around the nucleus — was itself built on Rutherford's 1911 nuclear model, but Bohr incorporated Planck's quantum theory to explain why atoms don't collapse. It was a solution to a problem classical physics couldn't touch.
Denmark has issued several Bohr commemoratives over the decades, but the 2013 aluminium bronze coin is the circulating-quality piece in that series, not a collector proof. Bohr fled Denmark in 1943 via Sweden after learning of his imminent arrest by the Gestapo.
