This piece belongs to Denmark's long-running commemorative 20 krone program, which has used the same circulation format since 1990 to mark scientific and cultural figures. Hans Christian Ørsted's inclusion is well-earned: his 1820 discovery that an electric current deflects a compass needle — observed almost accidentally during a lecture — established the first experimental link between electricity and magnetism, directly inspiring Ampère's mathematical formulation within weeks.
Ørsted also founded what is now the Technical University of Denmark in 1829.
