Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Margrethe II's accession in 1972, this coin was part of Denmark's ongoing practice of using circulation commemoratives to mark royal milestones rather than producing separate bullion or proof-only issues. Aluminium bronze was chosen deliberately to keep the piece in everyday use — a policy the Nationalbanken maintained through much of the 1990s to drive actual handling of commemorative coinage rather than hoarding.
