Denmark's 20 krone coin has cycled through multiple portraits of Margrethe II since her accession in 1972, each revision typically commissioned to reflect the queen's age more accurately. This fifth portrait, introduced in 2013, was sculpted by Ørnulf Bilow-Hansen and represents the most recent update to a denomination that has carried her effigy longer than almost any comparable European circulation coin.
The aluminium bronze alloy, adopted for this series decades earlier, has proven resistant to the kind of edge wear that plagued earlier Danish bimetallic experiments in the 1990s.
