The Gåsetårnet — the "Goose Tower" — is the medieval defensive tower at Vordingborg Castle, one of the most strategically critical fortresses in medieval Denmark. Valdemar IV Atterdag began construction there in the 14th century, and the castle served as a key seat of royal power during repeated conflicts with the Hanseatic League. By the 17th century it was already a ruin. The 2004 coin belongs to Denmark's long-running castle and landmark series, which began in 1990 and cycled through ten designs before completion.
Margrethe II's fourth portrait, introduced that same year, was sculpted by Mogens Møller.
