Denmark's 20 krone coin underwent a significant redesign program in the 2000s as the National Bank periodically refreshed portrait coinage to reflect the queen's age — this 2008 issue marking the fourth such update for Margrethe II, who acceded in 1972. The aluminium bronze alloy had already proven its durability through decades of heavy vending machine and retail use, a practical consideration that drove its adoption across Scandinavian coinage from the late twentieth century onward.
Margrethe II is the first Danish queen regnant since Margrethe I in the fourteenth century.
