Issued to mark the 40th anniversary of Margrethe II's accession on January 14, 1972, this commemorative was struck in the same aluminium bronze used for circulation 20-krone pieces — a deliberate choice to keep the jubilee coin spendable rather than purely collectible. Margrethe ascended following the 1953 succession law change that allowed female inheritance of the Danish throne, without which she could not have reigned at all.
