Magnus VI earned the epithet "Lagabøte" — law-mender — for commissioning Norway's first unified national legal code in 1274, replacing a patchwork of regional laws that had governed different parts of the kingdom independently for centuries. The Landsloven applied equally across the realm, a consolidation that was genuinely radical for medieval Scandinavia. This 2024 issue marks the 750th anniversary of that codification.
Harald V authorized the commemorative under Norges Bank's ongoing 20-krone cultural series.
