The Oesterreichisch-ungarische Bank issued this 20 Kronen note under the currency regime established by the 1892 monetary reform, which replaced the Gulden with the Krone at a ratio of 2:1 — a deliberate stabilization measure following decades of inflationary paper money stemming from the wars of the mid-nineteenth century. The reform pegged Austria-Hungary to the gold standard in principle, though full convertibility was never actually achieved in practice.
The 1900 date places this note squarely in a period of relative monetary calm before the pressures of World War I dismantled the entire dual-monarchy banking apparatus. Notes of this type were withdrawn and largely destroyed after 1918, which accounts for the genuine scarcity of surviving examples in any grade.
