Sigismund von Schrattenbach ruled as Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1753 until his death in 1771, and is remembered in music history almost entirely for one decision: he retained the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in his court, granting the family repeated leave to travel. These kreuzers circulated during the years Mozart was developing as a composer under Schrattenbach's patronage, before the far less accommodating Hieronymus Colloredo succeeded him.
The Zöttl numbers spanning four consecutive entries suggest minor die variations across the emission, consistent with Salzburg's practice of annual die renewals under the Holy Roman imperial minting conventions.
