Reverse description The enthroned Madonna seated facing, holding the Christ Child on her left arm, positioned atop an ornate pedestal bearing the numeral '20' denoting the denomination. The date is divided by the pedestal, with digits appearing on either side. A laurel branch extends to the left and a palm branch to the right of the central device, framing the composition. The legend 'PATRONA-BAVRIAE' arcs along the upper periphery, identifying the Virgin Mary as the patron of Bavaria.

Additional information

Maximilian III Joseph spent much of his reign methodically reforming Bavaria's chaotic coinage, bringing it closer into alignment with the Conventionsthaler standard established by the Austro-Bavarian monetary convention of 1753. The 20 Kreuzer denomination was a workhorse of that reformed system, circulating widely enough that late-date examples from the early 1770s tend to show honest wear.

Maximilian died in December 1777 with no legitimate heir, extinguishing the Wittelsbach-Bavarian line and triggering the War of the Bavarian Succession within months.
