Obverse description Bare-headed bust of Grand Duke Ludwig I of Hesse facing right, with short curled hair rendered in a neoclassical style, engraved by Johann Lindenschmit. The portrait is centrally positioned within the field, with the truncation of the neck visible at the lower portion. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy reading LUDWIG GROSSHERZOG VON HESSEN, with the initial L appearing after the ruler's name. The coin's rim is dentilated throughout.
