Hieronymus von Colloredo ruled Salzburg from 1772 until Napoleon's forces effectively ended the prince-archbishopric in 1803. An ardent supporter of Josephinist reform, he clashed famously with his own court — most notoriously with Leopold Mozart, whose son Wolfgang he dismissed from service in 1781 in a dispute that ended with a literal kick to the backside, as reported by Mozart himself in letters to his father. The archbishopric's coinage of this period reflects a fiscally pressed administration navigating the costs of enlightened reform against a restive population.
