Beschrijving voorzijde Draped bust of Elector Charles Theodore facing right, rendered in a naturalistic late-Baroque style with flowing curled hair and elaborate lace-trimmed court dress visible at the truncation. The effigy is boldly struck and occupies most of the field. The encircling Latin legend runs along the periphery and records the ruler's full titles as Count Palatine of the Rhine, Duke of Bavaria, and Arch-Steward of the Holy Roman Empire. A small star or ornament appears at the base of the bust below the truncation.

Aanvullende informatie

Charles Theodore inherited Bavaria in 1777 under circumstances that nearly unraveled the electorate entirely — Frederick the Great intervened militarily to block his attempted cession of Lower Bavaria to Austria in the War of the Bavarian Succession. By 1792, the year this piece was struck, Charles Theodore's rule was deeply unpopular; he had no legitimate heirs, governed largely through Austrian influence, and faced a Bavarian population that openly preferred his successor. French Revolutionary forces would render much of this coinage moot within a few years.
