Obverse description Central field features the shield of Bern — a diagonally striped escutcheon bearing the rampant Bernese bear — set within an elaborate baroque cartouche with foliate scrollwork. The denomination 'CR 20' appears at the base of the cartouche, below the shield. A continuous Latin legend encircles the design along the rim, reading MONETA REIPVBLICAE BERNENSIS.

Reverse description Four large mirrored Gothic 'B' monograms arranged in a cruciform pattern, their backs meeting at the centre to form an ornate cross device that fills the field. The date 1679 appears to the left within the legend, and the letter 'V' to the upper right. The surrounding Latin motto DOMINVS PROVIDEBIT ('The Lord will provide') runs along the outer rim, interrupted by a finely toothed inner border.
