The Tauric Mint at Feodosia operated for barely two years, established specifically to produce coinage from silver looted during Russia's annexation of Crimea in 1783. Catherine II ordered a distinct regional issue — separate from the standard Imperial coinage — partly as a political statement to the newly absorbed Crimean Tatars and partly to absorb local bullion stocks. The mint closed in 1788, making the entire Feodosia output a compressed series with no continuity before or after.
Billon content varied noticeably across the run, as the refining infrastructure in Feodosia was never fully stabilized.
