Additional information

The 1923 R.S.F.S.R. coinage patterns represent the Soviet state's earliest attempts to establish a post-civil-war monetary identity before the formal creation of the U.S.S.R. later that same year. Pattern strikes in copper were produced alongside silver and aluminum trials as the new government weighed both material costs and symbolic messaging for circulation coinage. The silver 20 kopeck ultimately entered production; this copper version did not.

KM#Pn176 is one of several known copper patterns from this experimental series, most of which passed through Soviet-era institutional collections before appearing at Western auction.
