Issued as part of Ukraine's ambitious bimetallic commemorative program launched in the late 1990s, this coin honors the Trypillian culture — a Neolithic and Chalcolithic civilization that flourished across the territory of modern Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania roughly between 5500 and 2750 BC. The Trypillians are notable for their large proto-urban settlements, some housing several thousand inhabitants, which predate comparable settlements elsewhere in Europe by centuries.
The gold-in-silver bimetallic format was technically demanding for the Lugansk Mint, which produced Ukraine's early commemorative issues before the Kyiv facility expanded its capacity.
