The central field bears a commemorative composition symbolizing victory, dominated by the gilded numeral 1944, above which burst salute fireworks rendered in relief. Beneath the date, a laurel branch tied with a ribbon and adorned with a star occupies the lower center, with the issue year 2014 positioned to the right of the star. Issued on the 70th anniversary of the Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi Offensive, one of the more tactically decisive operations of the Eastern Front's winter of 1944. Soviet forces under Konev and Vatutin encircled roughly 60,000 German troops of Army Group South in what the Wehrmacht called the Cherkassy Pocket. The breakout attempt in February cost catastrophic losses — German accounts claim 35,000 escaped; Soviet records dispute that figure sharply.
The coin appeared in Ukrainian shops the same year Russia annexed Crimea, lending an unintended edge to a commemorative otherwise treated as routine military history.
