One of the more unusual products of Austria's post-WWI notgeld period, this piece was issued not by a municipality or savings bank but by a private timber industrialist — Ludwig Altzinger, operating out of Zell bei Zellhof in Upper Austria. The choice of material is self-referential in a way few notgeld pieces can claim: a wood merchant issuing currency pressed from thin wood veneer, redeemable presumably against his own stock or wages.
Wood notgeld was produced by a handful of Austrian issuers in 1920, exploiting the same collector enthusiasm that drove the broader notgeld boom, but genuine paper shortages in rural areas gave some of these issues a practical dimension as well.
