Wippenham is a small village in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similar rural communities, it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that followed Austria's defeat in the First World War. These hyperlocal issues were often produced in tiny quantities by local printers with whatever materials were on hand, which is precisely why so many are now scarcer than the more celebrated city issues from Vienna or Linz.
The two signatures represent municipal officials rather than banking authorities — Wippenham had no bank to speak of.
