Weng is a small Austrian municipality, and like hundreds of comparable communities, it issued Notgeld in the immediate postwar years to address the catastrophic coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The 1920 dating places this squarely in the second wave of Austrian local emergency money — by this point the practice had become semi-normalized, with municipal councils authorizing their own series and local officials signing off on them.
The single signature of Matth. Wagner almost certainly represents the Bürgermeister or a deputized municipal treasurer rather than a printer or designer. Paper Notgeld from villages this small was typically printed by regional job printers in short runs, and surviving examples are often found with uneven ink coverage as a result.
