Weissenkirchen in der Wachau was one of hundreds of Austrian municipalities forced to print their own small-denomination emergency currency — Notgeld — after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left ordinary commerce without adequate coinage. Paul Gerin in Vienna was among the more prolific printers of this municipal paper, handling commissions from market towns throughout Lower Austria during 1919–1920.
The 20 Heller denomination targets everyday retail transactions — the sort of change that had effectively vanished from circulation by 1920. Jaksch/Pick JPR1158Ia covers the full Weissenkirchen issue, of which this is the lower value.
