Wartberg ob der Aist is a small market town in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similar municipalities it issued its own emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg economy. The 1920 dating places this squarely in the second wave of Austrian local issues, after the initial wartime shortages had given way to the broader monetary chaos of the early republic.
