Wang is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this 20 Heller note is one of the thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues that flooded the country after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local communities without adequate coin. The Pressverein-Druckerei in St. Pölten — a press with Catholic publishing associations — handled a significant volume of Lower Austrian municipal emergency money during this period, which accounts for the consistent production quality seen across regional issues from 1920.
The designer credit "R.L. stud. paed." identifies a student of pedagogy, almost certainly a local, commissioned on the cheap.
