Reverse description Violet letterpress on pale green underprint, with the numeral '20' in plain circles at upper left and right, pendant floral garland borders framing the lateral edges. The denomination words 'Zwanzig' and 'Heller' are set in large Gothic type to either side of a central ornate cartouche enclosing a floral vase motif on a guilloche ground, beneath which a ribbon scroll bears the date 'anno 1655'. Two Gothic-script text blocks state the redemption conditions, and the place-date 'Marktgemeinde Wang, am 5 Juni 1920' with the mayor's facsimile signature appears at lower right, with the printer's imprint 'Pressverein-Druckerei St. Pölten, N.-Ö.' in the bottom margin.

Comments

Wang is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this 20 Heller note is one of the thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues that flooded the country after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local communities without adequate coin. The Pressverein-Druckerei in St. Pölten — a press with Catholic publishing associations — handled a significant volume of Lower Austrian municipal emergency money during this period, which accounts for the consistent production quality seen across regional issues from 1920.

The designer credit "R.L. stud. paed." identifies a student of pedagogy, almost certainly a local, commissioned on the cheap.
